Getting to Know Mercedes Garcia

Do you think you know the faculty at NMH? Most students think they do. However, upon asking a randomly selected group of students about Mercedes, the results were surprising to say the least. Mercedes is a part of the staff in both the workjob and OMA office, and works with DEI initiatives on campus. On top of this, she teaches DSJ and is a dorm faculty in C5. Throughout working with Mercedes and on the podcast, I learned a lot about her, and gained a new, unique perspective on her work. This podcast has been highly informative and influential for me, and I hope you all enjoy it the same way that I did.

The Hoggers' Traditions

For this podcast, I took inspiration from my own experiences as a two-year senior, getting to know the traditions and then becoming a part of them. I have interviewed students around campus to discover their favorite traditions and their reasons behind them. Surely there were many reasons and answers, but all of them led to the same way...community.

IT’S A SAD SONG. BUT WE SING IT ANYWAY.

Come hear what it really took to bring Hadestown to life.

Making this podcast episode helped me discover my love for sound. It’s amazing how much emotion can be carried in one sound, be it a short gasp, laughter, story, or music. Once I found this love — both in the musical and as a process of creating the podcast itself — I put it in every second of what you’ll hear. And if, after listening, you feel like you want to go and watch this show right away, then I know I’ve done my job.

This episode starts with a brief intro from Michelle and Amy, followed by responses from the NMH community on defining “Asian” and “Asian American” (3:27). Then, through an in-depth conversation with Jessica Zhang (6:05), we dive into the fluid evolution of socially defined identities and together reframe how we should approach categorization.
